SHIMBA RAINFOREST LODGE

The Shimba Hills Lodge is the only ‘tree lodge’ within Kenya’s Coastal rain Pond. An award winning design when built in 1986, it was commissioned as a coastal alternative to the famous Tree Tops. Throughout its construction emphasis was upon natural materials with cedar wood dominating resulting in a warm and relaxing interior.

In the middle of the rain forest, built right next to a large waterhole, you will find the Shimba Hills Lodge. The spacious veranda directly overlooking the small lake offers you the opportunity to observe in comfort wildlife such as the white-headed fish eagle, monitor lizards, monkeys, antelopes, hornbills, turtles, and other animals in their natural habitat. Staying at the Shimba Hills Lodge offers you the perfect moment to find peace of mind, to feel the “Breath of Life”- especially at dusk when the voices of the rainforest wake up to perform their nocturnal concert!

Our package “Adventure Rainforest” takes you to the exciting world of the Shimba Hills, where we look forward to welcoming you!

Adventure Rainforest!

The Shimba Hills National Reserve, 30km South of Mombasa, consists of rainforest, wood- and grassland and is very important for the conservation of plant biodiversity in this area. More than 50 percent of rare plant species in Kenya can be found in this zone.

Part of this ecosystem is one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa. It is an important bird area and houses forest birdlife while the grasslands are the living environment for localised species such as the Red Necked Spur Fowl, Croaking Cis:cola and Zanzibar Red Bishop. The tropical forest of the Shimba Hills is also a unique habitat for elephants of the Kenyan coast and the last breeding herd of indigenous sable antelopes in Kenya is domiciled in this national reserve.

A special highlight of the area is the famous Sheldrick waterfall, offering the possibility to enjoy the picturesque scenery while walking down the descend to the refreshing freshwater pool at the foot of the falls.

The Reserve has several breath-taking vantage points which offer splendid views of the rolling hills and forested countryside, the Indian Ocean and Chale island to the East and the Tsavo plains and Taita hills to the West.
